Pound for Pound, The Movie ‘Heavyweights’ Has the Best Vintage T-Shirts
If you’re as old as me you probably haven’t watched the movie Heavyweights since the 90s. Heavyweights featured Ben Stiller and all of my favorite iconic 90s kid actors like Kenan Thompson and Shawn Weiss (who, until this moment, I only knew as “Goldberg”). The movie is a surprisingly dark take on a teenager’s experience at a fat camp that suddenly gets sold to a crazy weight loss guru with daddy issues. Being released in 1994 (a year I’ve personally thought might be the peak of vintage t-shirts), the movie features some serious banger tees. So let’s dig into some ... Read more
The Life & Tees of DJ AM
In 2009 I was lucky enough to interview DJ AM about all things vintage tees. What impressed me more about his collection was that he was happily willing to lend the time to participate (we were a much smaller operation at the time.) There was no runaround with an agent or rep and I didn’t have to hound him to get a response. (Admittedly, I just scoured through our email correspondence again and was thoroughly reminded what a solid guy he was.) The last emails are particularly fitting as to what’s going on right now… From: James Date: Wed, 15 ... Read more
The Heartbreaking Story Behind Barry’s Beastie Boys T-Shirt In The Goldbergs
[VINTAGE TEE COLLECTOR TRIGGER WARNING AHEAD] Back in 2014 I put together a complete guide to the vintage tees in season one of The Goldbergs. Yes, I am a madman who carefully documented all of the t-shirts that appeared in all 23 episodes of the first season. Many of them were true vintage, so I respected the effort put in by the show to stay true to the era. The guide was even well-received by Adam Goldberg, the show’s creator. @defunkd And this is the my dream shirt for the show. I wore it for YEARS... http://t.co/JetfddNpkO— Adam F. Goldberg ... Love is a Mixtape
The Goldbergs have returned! Back in May I geeked out and watched every episode from the first season and documented which vintage t-shirts make cameos. Well, I’m turning this into a weekly report… But sadly, I don’t have much to report t-shirt wise from the first episode. It didn’t feature much if any true vintage tees (with prints.) Our gut says that Lost Boys tee above is not true vintage. But thankfully the show has so much retro eye candy, nostalgic flashbacks, and laughs that we have found it in our hearts to forgive. Besides, I’ve heard rumblings from several ... Read more
Shazbot!
I don’t usually get choked up when a celebrity passes, but Robin Williams is an exception. Like many 80s kids I was raised on TV and Mork & Mindy was my gateway into boob-tube addiction. Looking back, the sitcom seems like it was accidental children’s show. Fluffy, fantasy filled story lines complimented by a colorful clown making weird sounds. And of course every episode ended with Mork reflecting on the life lessons he learned. I can’t think of a better role model for a little guy growing up in a single parent home. When Popeye hit theaters in 1980 you ... Read more
