Shirt #1: Less Than Zero Availability: Currently Available on Defunkd Released: 1987 Fact: Less Than Zero is based on the novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis. Ellis reportedly disliked the film expressing that it wasn’t closely scripted to his novel. He also felt that it was miscast with one of the exceptions being Downey Jr. who played a drug addict. The special effects for live-action in 1978 were not advanced enough to do a Tolkien film justice, so the producers made the wise decision to animate. But many scenes in this film were actually shot traditionally with actors in costume but these frames were then retroscoped. A brain, athlete, basket case, princess and a criminal spend eight hours in detention for various scholastic crimes. Each are given the chore of writing a 1000 word essay explaining who they are. But instead they goof-off, antagonize each other, do drugs, make-out and then rely on the nerd to do their work for them. Lesson learned.
