Vintage Grateful Dead T-Shirt Auctioned by Sotheby’s Fetches $17,640
There’s a new record for the most expensive band t-shirt. Back in 2011, we broke the news that a vintage Led Zeppelin t-shirt that sold for $10k on eBay. It took ten years but the record sale for a band tee has not only been broken but smashed, by two Grateful Dead tees. I took a break for a couple of years from the VTU (vintage tee universe) and all hell broke loose. Marketplace platforms like Grailed and Depop (sold to Etsy!) exploded while a ton of transactions started happening through Instagram DMs. Then the early days of the pandemic ushered in live auctions on IG courtesy of 1980 Something Co. Etsy Clearly Invested In Vintage Clothing, Buys Depop for 1.62 Billion
Etsy announced earlier today they’re buying Depop for $1.62 billion and expects to finalize the deal by the end of 2021. Founded in 2011, Depop allows roughly 30 million users in 150 countries to buy and sell used and vintage clothes through its platform. “Depop is a vibrant, two-sided marketplace with a passionate community, a highly-differentiated offering of unique items, and we believe significant potential to further scale,” Etsy CEO Josh Silverman said in a statement Wednesday. 90% of Depop’s users are under the age of 26, and this acquisition will give Etsy an opportunity to tap into the Depop ...
