Are this sellers shirts authentic?

Post by Kyleprossiter »

depop.com/spvrlock/

A friend of mine purchased a shirt from this seller and upon receiving the shirt I informed them that their shirt was a counterfeit. They immediately requested a refund from Depop to which Depop responded: “After a thorough investigation we have verified that the item is as described and are satisfied
with the proof of its authenticity provided by the seller. This means we won't be processing a return or refund.”

Now I will admit that I am by no means the pinnacle of vintage shirt experts, however I believe I have collected enough to catch obvious red flags. Regardless, I’m looking for some outside opinions on the authenticity to help with Depop’s investigation. Perhaps I got it wrong and this seller just so happens to have a very impressive collection. Please let me know your opinions and any proof if possible. Also any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated, Thank you!

Nope - immediately able to see they are modern counterfeits but still reviewed 10 t-shirts, they are all fake. No one is selling those shirts for $60 each if they are real - all this seller is doing is buying Thai counterfeits in bulk for $20-30 each and flipping them.

Can you please connect us with your friend would love to cover this Depop situation, we are growing really tired of platforms going to bat for counterfeit goods - and in some cases even authenticating them.

With any bit of digging they could have determined this on their own.

Let us know thanks!

Thank you for the quick reply Jimmy! I have been in an ongoing feud with Depop over this (to the point they’ve threatened to ban me for publicly calling this seller out by name).

I will have my friend reach out to you. This seller has 13k followers on Instagram, so it would definitely make for a good story. I’ll stay on top of Depop and hope they get it resolved. For now, I’ll attach the responses from Depop on the issue.

Ok so it's you who purchased the t-shirts in question or your friend? Can we please post the t-shirts you're disputing in here please? I will review them, then you can follow up with DePop with this url. If they continue to make a poor choice in favor of a seller who is selling modern counterfeits, then we'll take things to the next level, and Depop will be called out.

Can you please tell me what the pit-to-pit measurements are in inches for the shirt you received with the Giant tag?

Here is an example of the tag the fake one on your shirt is based on.

On yours, we also noticed some suspect loose threads where it is fastened. Additionally, there's a black line on the tag, just below the flap—is that another set of threads?

22" is also outside of the range of an Giant L - 22" is typically what an XL would be.

A Giant L is around 20".

I can't see the print, but based on those two points alone, counterfeiting is involved here, and DePop should be honoring a refund, and be ashamed that they treated a customer like this, while having the back of someone with an account full of fakes that infringe upon several IPs.

It's an odd situation - looks as though they installed a fake tag, hoping to boost the value of the shirt. Usually people attempt this with real tags.

Yeah full bogus. I mean, the tag is all you really need, no one is taking a real Nirvana Sliver t-shirt and installing a fake tag in it - but was curious to see the print.

Well, I sent this to URL to Depop and they decided to close the seller’s account. However, two days later they reinstated their account due to “miscommunications” on their part.

So, the buyers get no refunds and the seller gets to continue making their money. Pretty sad what the platform turned into

I contacted the seller via IG, encouraging a peaceful resolution to this so everyone could just move on.
Are this sellers shirts authentic?
I didn't get a chance to see their response before they deleted it and blocked us. But it was something along the lines of them being allowed to sell these t-shirts, and that they didn't call them vintage (even though "vintage" is in the description of each listing at the bottom), and suggesting the dispute was over an entirely different t-shirt.

I don't really understand this move - why bother to keep this going, it's just not worth it for $50.

Anywho, let us know what Depop says now that you mentioned they escalated to a different department.

For clarification, we're not interested in trying to out sellers for dealing in counterfeits, we don't have the time or energy. But we do have an interest in platforms that are openly allowing the sale of counterfeit goods, and not honoring refunds in instances where a sale of one has occurred.
