1978 Dylan U.S. Tour

Post by Ifnot4u »

I am posting photos I took of the shirt my wife purchased for me on eBay. I am an avid collector of vintage shirts, and have been looking for this one for years. What confuses me is that 1) the shirt looks brand new, but the image looks all splotchy and the color mis-aligned. 2) the stitching around the collar, sleeves, and hem are uneven and 3) the color of the shirt seems off-colored - I took a photo of the shirt on a white background.
If this shirt is a fake, the seller went through a lot of trouble to produce it. He does not sell vintage shirts, but rather sells odd old items, which confuses me.
Please look over the photos, and lend your expert opinion.
Thank you.
Sincerely Dylan

It's suspect. Not because of the sloppy stitching - Ive noticed that on many shirts over the years. The color of the tee is okay - I think these were printed on off white, beige, and yellow.

The biggest red flag is that Screen Stars came to be in 1980. And that particular tag was the third version that came out in 1983. Take a look at our most recent blog post.

The print does seem sloppy. As well as the fade on the colors in places like the snakes rear coils. But it appears as though the circle background color and the snakes base color are the same- when other versions they are clearly different colors. Counterfeitters will try to skimp on using more colors. The other oddity is the space between the copyright symbol and B - most of the others online there's very little space.

It's a detailed shirt and for the most part the details are there...but just not as crisp. Maybe its an ink print by a machine and because its not 50 50 - its loosing definition in the print as the poly doesn't absorb the ink, only the cotton.

When you run your fingers over the print - is it raised? can I see a shot of the print from the inside?

Id have to see in person. When you run your fingers from fabric to ink can you really feel the raised ink?

Aside from that...looking at the tag again - my error - the 1978 tee is on a shirt from 1983+. So that SS tag is actually the third incarnation.

This print was also in the portfolio of Tiny Pony when they had a massive counterfeit operation running in the late 2000s.

Thank you.
