80s. Although I have seen a t-shirt with a late 70s copyright and the yellow velvasheen tag.

The later velva sheens have blue lettering on a white label which has a satin-like finish to it. (see pic below)

Literally every other t-shirt that I see with this tag has mickey on it. What prints do yours have?

Here's a pic of one off a late 70s shirt and i believe this same tag was used on early and maybe mid 80's too.

I love Velva Sheen!

Here's an interesting article I found on Google Books:
http://books.google.com/books?id=WR8DAA ... ti&f=false" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I also learned that Velva Sheen was bought out by Brazos in 1994, despite their predictions of 10% annual growth in the previous article. Brazos also bought up another vintage favorite, Gulf Coast Sportswear in the 90s. Brazos filed Chapter 11 in 1999.

Gotta love the internet! There is some anthropology and sociology to this vintage business, no?

I recently came across this great orange cotton Velva Sheen with a fantastic Norton iron-on (dated 1973). The Velva Sheen tag certainly looks older than any others I've seen before so I'd tend to place it sometime in the 70's (maybe close to the date of the iron-on).

nice - that's the tag the modern day versions duplicated, haven't ever seen one:

http://www.defunkd.com/2010/07/12/velva-sheen/

might even have been carried over from the 60s....certainly isn't like most other 70s tags.

wicked shirt...too bad it's an iron on.

Wow, I've never seen that one before either. What designs are on the t-shirts with that tag?

JJ,

There is no design...just a plaint ringer t-shirt with wording "williams"

ahhh, ok - probably mid-late 1960s - I believe that's when ringers first appeared? Does anyone know when ringers were invented? I know they were huge in the 70s, but what decade were they conceived?

I'm gonna have to add that image to:

I would say 70s

It seems like ringers didn't come around until the 70s

I'm sorry i can't help with the date of this particular shirt, but the mid 60's first gave birth to a beautiful, bouncing, baby ringer boy (or girl).

Yep! I worked at Velva-Sheen in Montgomery, Ohio during my Christmas and summer breaks in 1965-to 1967. Later the factory would be finished in Fairfax, Ohio. My best friend's father was part owner of the company (William and Bob Rielly).
They sold the bus to Beatrice Foods sometime later. I have many great memories of my days there working in the printing, shipping and receiving and finally in sales. It felt like being apart of a family the way that Bill treated everyone and it remains a dear memory to me even today some 48 years later.

Awesome! Got any old Velva Sheen shirts in the closet? :D

Seriously though, do you happen to have any old Velva Sheen letterhead, or brocures, or coffee mugs or pens or anyhing? I collect that kind of stuff.

I worked at college bookstore 1964-1968, and Velva Sheen was the primary supplier of college prints tees and sweatshirts. I even visited the plant in Cincinnati, then in a poor part of town. Charlie Lee was a great guy and had hired mostly derelicts and trained them, long before federal programs ever existed. I went into the Army and lost track, so not sure when they sold out.

Funny you mention that! My husband asked me recently how I can about t-shirts with no date and explained how most t-shirts were mostly made in the US until the very early 90s and how the change of "made in [insert country here]" on the labels coincided with NAFTA.

I also went into stitching and fit, but he was fascinated how t-shirts had 6 degrees of separation from politics.
