Think I found a vintage Bob Marley. Cotton Republic?

Post by TimeForMemories »

Found this nice Bob Marley sweatshirt yesterday. Small chest logo on front, big logo on back. Brand is Cotton Republic. I'm pretty sure it's vintage 80s. It's soft and lightweight, tag design looks old/80s, 50/50, made in USA, tagged XL but measures 25" long by 22.5" pit to pit by 20" pit to sleeve end so much smaller than modern XL sweatshirts.

1. Can anyone confirm my suspicions of its vintageness? And anyone heard of the brand?

2. What would you price it at? I know true vintage Bob Marley stuff can get up there.

Nice score! That brand doesn't ring any bells. Certainly has the measurements and blend right. I've always associated that Marley logo with more modern times for some reason. So maybe it's 90s? See if you can find the first instances of that logo being used - it's in use on the Marley website now.

Marley stuff is really undervalued if you ask me. Even mosquitohead tees only fetching $100 to $200. Maybe get $50-75?

Thanks for the input, Jimmy! I did search some trying to find an initial trademark date for that particular logo, but didn't find anything yet. I will keep searching and see if I can find anything. When I searched "Cotton Republic" it just to me to a company of that name with people in underwear. :\ Thought the tag might clue someone on here in on the era, but I'll just keep digging and see what I can find.

So far the earliest I've seen this logo on a shirt along with a copyright date has been 1993. Gonna keep searching...

Found this "Cotton Republic" shirt from 1993 and the tag is completely different and not made in USA - https://www.etsy.com/listing/187403829/ ... world-tour

Also found this "Cotton Republic" shirt with the same tag as mine and a copyright date of 1988 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-T-SHIRT ... 1972343668

And this one from 1990 with the same tag - http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/o ... 1784021784

So is it safe to assume this is probably late 80s?

The Dick shirt is a 24 inch pit...so I think thats a case of artwork/ copyright from the 80s and printed on a 90s tee. Could put 80s/90s just to be sure. I did a quick scan of Marley tees and all the ones with that logo were 90s and up.
