Un-Shrink a T-Shirt? Myth Busted!

household hackerAfter posting Can I Make a Vintage T-Shirt a Size Bigger? I did a little more research on the legitimacy of the Household Hacker tutorials. I used the Google, watched even more ridiculous claims, ie, How to Power a TV With a AAA Battery, and then read their YouTube feedback. My hopes of resurrecting a shirt-too-small shrunk faster than a brand new shirt in the dryer.

Originally I had planned testing this on many different t-shirts, varying in age, fabric blends, even color – complimented by a photo shoot during the various stages. Instead, I kept-it-simple-stupid and tested it on a 100% cotton tee. I was still static-clinging to hope. Mainly because they also throw in the odd tutorial that actually works, so I crossed my fingers that this would be one of them.

These pranksters have put in a lot of work in to posting bogus tutorials that are quasi-believable because of simple camera trickery. I guess it’s kind of funny. They should at least have the sense not to suggest methods that encourage people to waste lots of power and water. Even worse, many of their videos suggest altering electronics, the use of power and other potentially dangerous things. They better come up with a How to Break Out Of Prison video, because eventually someone is going to hurt themselves as a result. At least that’s what Grandma says!

And speaking of Grandma – her un-shrink technique is still the only proven method:

Wash the garment. While it’s still damp gently stretch it from opposite sides of the fabric, in every direction – then hang dry it. Once the shirt is dry, call your mother, she misses you. Oh, and my arthritis is acting up again!

That’s a bummer, but thanks for the investigation! On a related note: if anyone is wondering how to make their BODY bigger to fit into that bed spread of a 1995 Hole shirt, or that 8 man tent of a Porno for Pyros shirt you’ve held onto since lollapalooza ’97, hit me up…I got that process down pat.

Damn! I was really excited about the prospect of being able to actually wear the other 1/3 of my collection that is too small.

O’well. I guess I already knew the truth, but I person can hope…right?
