Velva Sheen

A comprehensive resource of defunct t-shirt labels manufactured prior to the year 2000.

Brand #10: Velva Sheen

Circulation: Common

Era: 1930s to Present

Information: Velva Sheen was conceived in 1936 as a humble garment operation under the direction of Oscar Schroeder. Velva differentiated itself from other knitwear companies by offering “lettered” garments which were detailed with custom text. As the t-shirt evolved the lettering was replaced by pioneering methods of printing with ink. After 20 years of hard work Oscar sold the business to Robert and William Reilly who continued to expand the operation. In the late 1970s and throughout the 80s Velva specialized in garments with standard in-house designs that were customized for souvenir shops, universities, companies, etc. Velva then leveraged their infrastructure to print and distribute custom merchandise by complimenting it with licensing agreements. Yep, those Mickey Mouse tees with “Florida” written beside him were the result of Velva’s formula.

In 1994 Velva Sheen was acquired by Brazos Sportswear which filled for bankruptcy in 1999 – yet strangely Velva Sheen tees are back in production. Apparently the trademark was scooped in 2009 by the Topwin Corporation who offer a vintage inspired blank complete with a tag bearing the original logo (far right).

Ahhh, the days of velva sheen incicnnati were high for volleyball players, too.  glad to see there is a classic offering to keep the cotton alive.

Velva Sheen used to have a warehouse in Cincinnati (this was late 70s/early 80s) where you could buy

    1) pretty much any college t/sweatshirt (probably not licensed, even if they were licensed back then)

    2) blank t-shirts with hundreds of iron-on choices, and best of all…

    3) giant bins of misprinted/ink test t-shirts, ranging in price depending how messed up they were. The best were like, a Coors logo, a St. Rita School for the Deaf picnic design, and a Proctor and Gamble sales meeting t-shirt all overlapping at random angles in weird colors, for $1.

I found some old Orange Crush swearshirts from around 1970. It says, “Hug Me, Crush Me, Luv Me” on the front. And in the original plastic bag, I think I’ll e-bay’em.

Very close on the history. Great company, great memories. Ironically, both brothers died within 12 hours of each other at the ages of 82 and 85. Philip Rielly (Robert’s son)

Hey Phillip, my name is Lisa Schroeder Wortmann. I am Oscar Schroeder’s granddaughter. I think this is sooo very cool that people are STILL interested in the Velva Sheen brand after all this time. Your father and uncle did such a great job of taking this company far beyond (probably) what my grandfather ever dreamed of. If you know any more history about Velva Sheen I’d love for you to share it with me. Thanks, Lisa

Wow… such a big part of my life! My dad Art Sr. (Tiny) was the Vice President/Art Director for Velva-Sheen. I grew up wearing misprints and worked there myself in the late 70’s early 80’s. Great memories.

I remember seeing….Davy Crockett shirts, College Fraternity Nebish shirts, Keep on Truckin’ shirts, Soap Box Derby shirts, Boys Club of America shirts, YMCA shirts……In addition to T-Shirts Velva Sheen even screen printed College Pennants, water soluble decals, Nylon Jackets and Sweat Shirts and Pants. I still have a mock-up dummy of the 1969 School Mascots Catalog used by salesmen. During the late 1970’s I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to design Smurf T-shirts and Major League Baseball shirts….Go Big Red Machine !!!! Attached is a family portrait of the Velva Sheen Creative Art Department circa 1979

My favorite shirt growing up was one of the random misprints I bought at the outlet store off Paddock Rd., it said Elmer Ave. Blue Dolphins. No idea where Elmer Ave is or what sport the Blue Dolphins team played!?

Didn’t see one posted here, slightly different varation. Loop in “L” and “H” are closed.
Came off a Girl Scouts sweatshirt, which oddly enough had a Mickey Unlimited tag still attached. Tag says Velva Sheen on it as well.

My father was George Glass and spoke often of your father. I,too, wore misprint tee shirts and often went to work with my dad on Saturday morning. He would put me to work sweeping the sewing room! Do you remember the company picnics at Lesourdsville?

The Reilly’s were very kind to my family while my father, George Glass, was employed there and was terminally ill with cancer. Good people. Good
company. They planted a tree in my father’s honor in the garden on the Velva Sheen property and invited my mother to the ceremony. What company would do that today?

I do remember George and I recall his illness. I was so impressed with his drive and will to work through his pain. I was sad when he passed on.
