Lets Talk About Odd Future

When we talk about OFWGKTA, I can see two or three responses. Anyone over the age of 25, I would expect a “huh?” And then it’s split on the younger than 25 crowd. It’ll either be “fucking rad” or “fuck those guys.” I expect either adoration, hatred or complete ignorance. I don’t think there is any middle ground on this one.

For those not in the know, Odd Future is a crew from Los Angeles. They are a loosely affiliated rap crew (think Wu-Tang or Dipset style) with loads of mixtapes. It’s a young crew too. Ages range from 17 to early 20s. Their style is definitely more Wu-Tang than Dipset though — hard style. And for you older heads, you may be wondering why I’m bothering to bring this up. Well, it turns out these dudes are all hardcore affiliated. I’m not sure how connected to the scene they are, but dudes have been spotted in Free Spirit AHC tees. You can’t go wrong with that. I’m also fairly certain members of this crew are down with the straight edge, at least Tyler The Creator is. Not bad. And for a kid who has over one hundred thousand twitter followers, has appeared on the cover of Billboard magazine and has performed on Jimmy Fallon, I think this is pretty significant.

What are your thoughts? Good, bad, or ignorant. Apparently someone loves them based on the prices of these auctions. A Free Earl Sweatshirt sweatshirt. Get it?

And this Supreme hat is blowing up because of Tyler wearing it in this video. Wild.

Maybe Julian can chime in and clear some of this up. What do you got, Julian?

Tyler the Creator is edge? Also, please post links to pics of these kids in Free Spirit shirts

  2. Julian C. says:

Pretty sure Julian and Lucas are the only one wearin free spirit tees. Rest of em are all just fairfax skate dudes.

  3. OF says:

post a pic of them in free spirit shirts!
    i’m interested now.

  4. thom k says:

at least every other song is about promiscuity so in my book tyler may be drugfree, but straight edge? negative.
as for odd future in general i don’t see where the hype is coming from. after all it’s the same misogynist and homophobic content that rap music has been pushing so hard since 2live crew was around (don’t quote me on that one cause i’m sure that bs started a long time prior) and it’s not like their style is the best around either…
but then again i’m way past 25 and hence not the target group, i guess, so whatever…

  5. micah says:

they make reference to rape alot too.

also, this sweatshirt is a bootleg made by someone on the vlv board

  6. brian/ivwt says:

    Great video….”Jane, inappropriate”

  7. b. murphy says:

I’m sick of hearing about these dudes. Too much. Too soon. …With that being said tho, Tyler is nice with the beats. I like some of his tunes but a lot of his lyrical content treads a little too close to some Insane Clown Posse shit for me tho. HOWEVER, Earl Sweatshirt and Domo Genesis in my opinion are beast’s on the mic. I’d go as far as saying that Earl is the best under 18 rapper I’ve ever heard in my entire life. #FreeEarl but please #StopTalkingAboutOddFuture. Haha.

  9. antonio says:

LOL not really into it. This video is pretty funny

I hear what you are saying, Chauncey. But I’d love for someone to clear this up. Get to the bottom of it all.

  11. brian/ivwt says:

I would put money on those guys watching ebay shirt auctions a lot, then just grabbing some $100 Free Spirit shirt because they are “hot”

  12. ChaunceyCC says:

Also, I wouldn’t exactly say these dudes are “Hardcore Affiliated” so much as I would say they just know Julian Berman. I could be wrong tho.

Now if you wanna talk Hardcore Affiliations in Hip Hop let’s discuss Danny Diablo. Haha. #TheLord

  13. shanexedge says:

Lucas is sporting an X watch, too. Can’t tell if it’s a legit Swatch or not, though:

For my money, Earl and Frank Ocean are the best dudes they’ve got.

  14. julian. says:

I wouldn’t necessarily say the dudes are into hardcore, but they do try to bring that punk aesthetic into their music. If you’ve never been to one of their shows, you know there are definitely tons of dives, people crowd climbing, and all that jazz.

Merch wise, it is just Lucas and I pretty much. The swatches are real, and I am pretty sure the Free Spirit shirts were 10$ when they came out here for the weekend tour, ahahahahahah… @brian/ivwt, putting money on it? Better pay up, tweet me for my paypal address ! ;)

I’ve been meaning to try and take Tyler to a show for a while now, hopefully it’ll happen one day. He claims edge, but it is a touchy realm of “I don’t listen to hardcore but am I straight edge?” Regardless, he is passionate about it, and fully backs the irony of his demonic drug induced lyrics.

Regardless though, being some of my greatest friends or not, they are killing it in the rap game and making a lasting impression. Just wait until Earl is back, ‘one day’……

Also, that crewneck is from somebody on the b9board.

  15. julian c. says:

I SAW TYLER WEARING A FREE SPIRIT SHIRT AND HE BIDS ON INVASION AND STOP AND THINK TEES, U MAD?

IF LUCAS EVER WORE A FAKE XSWATCH CONSIDER HIM DEAD.

    love,
    his boyfriend

  16. Lucas says:

You better believe i wear an OG X-rated Swatch. And Julian and I are the only people in it that really are into hardcore.

  17. no names please says:

can’t wait for white kids to move onto something else.

  18. ChaunceyCC says:

I back Tyler being edge. It’s cool to see a straight edge MC not using it as his gimmick. And it’s like, If dudes really wanna be mad about someone being straight edge who’s not affiliated with the core go fuckin’ get mad at James Hetfeild or that stupid fuckin’ wrestler.

But then again I’m not edge and if I was I might feel differently.

  19. ChaunceyCC says:

PS. How did this thread NOT get a #Swag hashtag? Haha.

  20. russell says:

Yo, posting to give love to my boy Julian and that Lucas kid, too. Good dudes, backed. From the east coast to the west coast! Bo!

  21. b. murphy says:

oooffff, fail. Definitely should have been #swag-ified.

  22. chris m says:

    Mediocre and overhyped. But whatever.

  23. Emil says:

As you might have guessed Brian, I had no idea what this was. Outside of some old, sad bastard stuff like Atmosphere I really don’t listen to contemporary hip-hop.

  24. kevin says:

Definitely not mediocre, Sweatshirt and Frank Ocean are definitely the top two in OF. Tyler’s personality kinda makes him annoying but his beats are sick. There’s a picture somewhere of Tyler with the vocalist of Trash Talk. Whether or not he’s into them is a different question.

  25. saxon says:

These guys are merdiocre, if you want to here some real sick young rappers listen to x raided – psycho active(1992) that stuff is amazing and he was 16 when he wrote it and went to jail the day before it was released and is still in there. No gimmicks.

  26. gabelord says:

i’m no “back in the day” obsessed dude in the slightest but this shit is everything i hate about the 21st century

  27. ChaunceyCC says:

I love that the most comments I’ve ever seen on this board have been about something Hip Hop related. Haha.

That just leads me to believe this board is full of #SecretWiggers. <3

  28. Closeted WIgger says:

Once a month savvy white writers find a new non-threatening, faux cerebral rapper to get behind. Black dudes with guns or vendettas against white people are scary. Brothers on skateboards that eat bugs are “crazy”.

Tyler is the latest in the line of skatebrothers who will last as long as The Pack.

Can’t wait for the Fucked Up Odd Future collabo shoe / 7″ covering Walk This Way.

  29. 6 says:

Is the same Lucas thats friends with japer?

  30. b. murphy says:

I like that the photo is dated 1994. LOL. Were those dudes even born in 1994??

  31. Dalton says:

To the fool who said tyler might like trash talk… trash talk is on the odd future label.. as in tylers label. And tyler used to be in a hardcore band soooooooo
