Good morning. School is back in session and this Foundation tanktop from protectxyaneck is an excellent opportunity for a history lesson. Today’s topic: Atlanta, GA.
The shirt below depicts the seal of Atlanta (which is actually a trademarked graphic …). The wording says “1847 RESURGENS 1865.” The first number is a date. This would be the year 1847. During this year, Atlanta becomes incorporated as a city. It was already a bustling place, but in that year, it officially became Atlanta. 1865 was the re-beginning of Atlanta. You see, in the fall of 1864, Atlanta was besieged by the Union Army. It was fierce and lasted a long time. And for some reason, General Hood of the Confederate Army decided that upon evacuating the city that every public building and potential asset to the Union force should be torched. That lead to large fires all over the city as the Northern forces entered town. Not good, not good at all. But 1865 is the year that the city began to rebuild. Hence the motto RESURGENS. This would be Latin for “Rise Again” or “Rising Again.” Even with the torched buildings, Atlanta rebuilt and came back strong. Today, the city is possibly the most sprawling city on the east coast and likely has the worst traffic anywhere. But it’s a marvelous city on the up swing. Rise Again!
