Back in 1999 (or was it 2000) before the Edge Day show, there was a crucial xmulletx swap at 8 Carmel in Boston. Dudes from all over the city, most in some of my favorite bands, gathered with boxes and bins of records, tshirts, posters and memorabilia. It was the xmulletx swap but in real life. Hell, someone even brought a bunch of EPs in a spice rack. An honest to goodness spice rack. Lots of excellent trades were made. I know I traded a gang green EP for an In My Eyes EP. Worth it to me. There were also many contentious trades made. I believe Seth traded Clevo a Slapshot crewneck for a few Rain On The Parade EPs. I’m not kidding either.
The most contentious of ALL trades was the one that went down between Spaulding and Tre. Tre had picked up an XXL Lonsdale jacket while on tour with some communist band in Amsterdam. It was a pretty excellent looking jacket, but it was 2XL. It wasn’t really fitting anyone. But Spaulding took a shine to it. The only item Tre wanted however was his Brotherhood LP. And not the band from out west. No, the DYS Brotherhood lp. Spaulding hemmed and hawed for a bit. He consulted a few other traders. Most called him insane. But in the end, Spaulding took the trade. He was now the owner of a 2XL Lonsdale jacket.
It helps if you know Spaulding. Spaulding probably weighs 150lbs soaking wet. He is probably 5′ 10″ on a good day. This jacket was WAY too big for him. Likely he never wore it and it sat in his closet. Hopefully, he was able to resell it later on for a profit. Who knows?
