The “Out Of This World” Vintage Clothing Of E.T The Extra-Terrestrial
E.T The Extraterrestrial was a surprise sensation and adjusted for inflation still ranks as the 7th highest grossing film all-time. Allegedly set in northern California, the movie heavily features clothing from several popular pacific northwest clothing brands like Nike and The North Face. Since the movie doesn’t feature as many T-shirts as previous entries we’ll cover a variety of vintage clothing genres including the most expensive hoodie I’ve ever seen.
1. Greg’s Vintage Mystery Space T-Shirt
Starting out with a stumper here. We searched high and low and couldn’t find an ID for this one. it doesn’t appear to be a well known IP so it’s likely a generic Penny’s or Sears space tee. It’s placement certainly is a foreshadowing of the rest of the movie. If you’ve ever seen this tee, phone home, or let us know in the comments.
2. Tyler’s Vintage Whippet Gasoline Greyhound T-Shirt
We couldn’t find an example of this one either, but this is a Whippet Motor oil T-shirt. Old oil cans from this company can go for hundreds, and considering how rare this tee appears to be maybe the shirt could as well.
3. Michael’s Bob Wolf Sneakers
This required some digital enhancing to come to this conclusion, even though they seem to have 3 stripes like Adidas, when looking closer these look more like 4 striped Bob Wolf sneakers to me.
4. Levi’s 501 Button Fly Jeans
Obviously, the patch here makes you think of Levi’s but other jean companies copied this element too. It was the stitching across the pocket edge that suggests that these are most likely Levi’s and probably the 501. In 1982 Levi’s was still producing some of their 501s with selvedge denim so these very well may be selvedge as well.
5. Steve’s Vintage Bowling Shirt
No idea what the brand of this shirt is but the back appears to say “Boots Kafeteria ***** Stockton”. We looked and haven’t been able to confirm that this is a real place or thing. But the use of Stockton aligns with the area where the movie was supposedly set in.
6. Elliot’s Vintage The North Face Backpack
The North Face was founded in San Fransisco. These back packs will be seen multiple times in the rest of the film.
7. Mary’s Vintage Lee Light Wash Denim Overalls
How many of our mothers wore this look in the 80s or 90s? Mine for sure. These are Lee brand mom denim overalls.
8. Elliot’s Vintage The North Face Puffer Jacket
While no branding is visible in the movie, the style of puffer jacket and location made it fairly obvious that this was a The North Face puffer jacket. You can get these jackets now for $50-80 but to get the one (and a few other pieces) Elliot wore in the film you’d have to drop $7,800!
8. Elliot’s Vintage Gap Boys Dark Wash Denim Flared Overalls
This one was hard to ID because little branding was visible but lucky for us this Gap Brand Flared Denim Overall was sold for $5,227.50 in 2013.
9. Michael’s Vintage Space Invader Video Game T-Shirt
Here we have one of the dopest tees in the film. Space Invaders was a big deal in the blossoming arcade scene in the early 80s and you can still pick this t-shirt up for about 80 bucks.
10. Elliot and Michael’s Vintage Gap Jeans, JC Penny’s Flannel, CPO Military Fatigues
Elliot rocking the JC Penny’s flannel under the puffer while again wearing some Gap Brand Flares. This outfit sold without the t-shirt for $6,765.00. Michael rocks the Chief Petty Officer Fatigues that may be actual military issue or a repro from a brand like Woolrich.
11. Elliot’s Vintage USA Frisbee V-neck T-shirt, Nike Oceania Sneakers
Frisbee and Nike were both gaining steam in the early 80s and I might suspect so was Elliot in this scene.
12. Michael’s Vintage No Nukes T-shirt
This mantra was popular following the legendary “No Nukes” concert by Bruce Springsteen in 1979.
13. Michael’s Vintage Property Of Alcatraz T-shirt
This tee was only in this momentary scene, but is one of the more well known tees from outside of the film. Famously also worn by Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry.
14. Elliot’s Vintage Nike Bruins Sneakers
A few years before Back To The future would prominently feature these sneakers Elliot from ET wore them. One of, if not the most blockbuster featured sneakers of all time.
15. Vintage Bob Wolf Sneakers
Another one.
16. Gertie’s Vintage Nike Oceania Sneaker
Little kids loved Oceania’s.
17. Michael’s Vintage Nike Elite Sneakers
Yup, more Nike’s.
18. Tyler’s Vintage Air Force Flight Jacket
Another military piece seen here with an interesting hard to see detail attached to the front of the jacket. Zooming in allows us to see this kid was a Hitchcock fan with this Bates Motel pins from the Movie Psycho.
19. Steve’s Vintage Van’s Sneakers
Barely visible, but you can see it… barely.
20. Elliot’s Vintage Generic Red Hoodie
This is a pretty generic 80s hoodie, but this iconic screen used hoodie sold for an astounding $42,000.00 in a 2013 auction.
